Bethesda Older Girls Director

 Older Girls U13-U19 Update:

As the recently elected Vice President for the Older Girls Program, I will be working with a newly established committee to move forward several ideas to improve the Older Girls' program.  First, I would like to thank the following individuals for their willingness to serve on the committee:  Jean White and Laurie Parr (U13), Doug Theuer (U14), Louise Slark (U15), Julie Doll (U16), and Larry LaTour (U17).  In my new role with the club, I have received and welcome input from members of the BSC community on ways in which to enhance the Girls' program.  Three new initiatives we are currently trying to implement include an ACL Prevention Program, a College Discussion Panel for BSC Players, and Entry into the Red Bull League.  Each of these is discussed in greater detail below.

ACL Prevention Program: The BSC Older Girls' Program has partnered with Dr. Anthony Beutler at the Injury Prevention Lab at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences to implement an injury prevention program to decrease the incidence of lower extremity injuries.  As outlined in the book Warrior Girls female athletes are up to 7 times more likely to suffer ACL injuries than their male counterparts.  Hopefully by now each older girls' teams (U14 and above) has received or is scheduled to receive an individual assessment and instructions on a corresponding 10 to 15-minute warm-up routine.  There is an important research component to this prevention program and we highly recommend that players participate.  To find out more information on this program and its research, read the Washington Post article on June 3, 2008 , "For Girls, Learning the Right Moves may Prevent a Common Athletic Injury."

BSCCollege Discussion Panel: After speaking with several older girls' managers, there is considerable support to provide a more personal forum on college recruiting for BSC players U15 and above.  While the Bethesda Tournament offers such a panel, there was a consensus that a more intimate and personal session would be well received and a way in which the club could further support its Older Girls' players.  I imagine that setting realistic expectations and the college recruiting process would be discussed.  I envision asking current college coaches within the club to serve as panel members, along with recent parents and their daughters who are playing at local universities.  If you are interested in helping to coordinate this effort, please email me directly at jazawolfe@yahoo.com Without your support, these initiatives cannot be realized!

Red Bull National League Ellis Pierre and the Older Girls' Program are aware of the newly established Red Bull National League for teams U15 through U17.  BSC is currently in the process of identifying the process for entry into the league for the Spring 2009 season.  To learn more about the Red Bull League go to www.redbullnl.com  We will keep you updated on our progress.

BSC Winter Training Program

The Bethesda Soccer Club offers an excellent opportunity for players who are serious about soccer and would like to learn how to play exciting possession-oriented soccer from professional coaches in a premier club environment.  Ellis Pierre and Jonathon Colton, both nationally licensed coaches with years of success preparing youth teams for premier play, are directing the Bethesda Soccer Club's (BSC) Winter 2008/2009 Developmental Training. These training sessions are open to all children whether they are Bethesda Soccer Club players or not.  Your children need to bring their own ball, shinguards, indoor non-marking soccer shoes, and water (no Gatorade).  (PLEASE NOTE: If your son/daughter played on a team with BSC in the fall they are not required to register/pay for the Winter 2008/2009 Developmental Training; the cost was included in the Fall 2008 season fees.)  Please check our website for an application form: bethesdasoccer.org

Your YDP Winter Schedule will be posted on the Bethesda Website shortly.

If you have any question about the Youth Development Program, please check out our page on the BSC website and feel free to contact Jonathon Colton and Ellis Pierre.

Center of Excellence Program

The Bethesda Soccer Club (BSC) is proud to announce the formation of its new "Center of Excellence" program.  This program is for elite female players of high school age (ages 15-17 years) who are looking for supplemental training as they seek to improve their game in a highly competitive and challenging environment.  The Center of Excellencealso strives to enhance club unity by bringing together highly skilled players from multiple club teams across various age groups.

The program will consist of at least 12 Monday practice sessions over the winter months (November - February) with the players ultimately representing the Bethesda Soccer Club over President's Day Weekend (February 14-16) at the President's Cup Tournament in Phoenix, AZ.

The coaching staff will consist of Dave Nolan (Head Coach, Georgetown University), Jon Morgan (Assistant Coach, University of Maryland), Kert Meese (BSC Coach, U17 Freedom 91), and Ellis Pierre (BSC Director of Youth Development).  Goalkeeping training also will be provided.

A training pool of approximately 24 players (21 players and 3 Goalkeepers) will be chosen based on the following criteria:

(a)  Current or prior National or Regional Team/Pool Exposure, or

(b)  State level ODP participation and recommendation by current club coach.

BSC will provide some financial support for this program.  Players will be responsible for travel expenses (airfare, hotel, and meals) to the tournament and will be asked to pay an upfront player fee of approximately $150 to cover costs of practice fields, uniforms, etc.

For more information, please speak with one of the Center of Excellence coaches or contact Dave Nolan at DMN@georgetown.edu, 703-869-1163.
